Top Ten Films of 2006

News Add comments

In the world of film criticism, you’d be a loser if you don’t have a Top Ten list for the year. So in order to not feel like such a loser, especially considering that I am sitting at home watching Sunday Night Football and eying up my pile of “Best Foreign Film” screeners on New Year’s Eve instead of partying, I have decided to draw up my own list to conclude the year. Here they are, my personal favorites, in reverse order:

10. The Devil Wears Prada

Meryl Streep absolutely steals this one, and turns it into one of the more fabulous and stylish films of the year.

9. United 93

Paul Greengrass handled a very touchy subject with immense reverence and class, allowing it to pay homage to heroes rather than exploit a tragedy.

8. Blood Diamond

Leo DiCaprio wasn’t as great as advertised, but the rest of the film was deeply moving and eye opening.

7. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

My true guilty pleasure of the year. It was the most awkward, twisted fairy tale that I have ever seen.

6. Brick

The most intelligent and engaging under-the-radar flick of the year.

5. The Departed

Scorsese delivers. Again. Period.

4. Bobby

Director Emilio Estevez paints a wonderful portrait of a great American with a solid ensemble and a great message.

3. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

A movie so funny that even if you don’t realize how smart it is, you still laugh to the brink of having an accident.

2. Thank You for Smoking

Sharp as a razor and fully loaded with political incorrectness. What is there not to love?

1. Little Miss Sunshine

No other film this year was as heart warming and genuinely funny as this little gem.

Honorable Mentions (films that I did not see, but may have had a chance to make the above list had I been able to see them.):

Children of Men
Little Children
Letters from Iwo Jima
Venus

That’s my list for 2006… Stay tuned as I will outline my 2007 Wish List (Movies that I am most excited about) later in the week.

Happy New Year!

[…] Feel free to check out the entire post here, including but not limited to the part where Erin McMaster (one of my favorite BC writers) touts Perfume: The Story of a Murderer as the best of the year. That guilty pleasure also snuck onto my Top Ten Films of 2006 list… […]

Did you rate these movies over at www.filmcrave.com - a social networking site. Also, from this you can create a top list of the best movies of 2006 though I think this feature is coming soon. I have to warn you though, filmcrave is very addictive.
